THE ARTIST

Rudi Buchanan Strewe…. Auckland 1984

Rudi trained as a motor cycle technician at Weltec in Wellington 2002-2004. Rudi has had no formal training in art and is completely self taught.

Rudi sees himself more as traditional artisan, where the process of using fire turns molten metal into sculptural forms using techniques that have been around for 1000’s of years; skill and technique count. Rudi thinks this is important and more pleasing for people to look at and handle than conceptual art. He first started by teaching himself black smithing and metal forging and then bronze casting using the lost wax process.

Rudi has exhibited in several group shows:

The West Coast Gallery - Piha, Morgan Street Gallery - New Market, Compendium Gallery - Central Auckland, Depot Artspace - Devonport, Satellite Gallery - Newton, The Lakehouse Art Centre - Takapuna, Art in the Woolshed exhibition at Tawharanui Open Sanctuary and Fo Guang Shan Gallery - Flatbush Auckland.

Rudi was a finalist in the Objective Art Awards at the Manukau Art Centre and received the Merit Award in 2011 in the Emerging Artist Awards at the Upstairs Gallery, Titirangi. Rudi was also a finalist several times in the Waitakere Art Awards and also has been a finalist twice in the Clifton Art Awards.

Rudi works from his studio in Karekare, Auckland and is available for commissions.
